The Float Squeeze

Why tiny-float stocks make 100%+ moves: supply and demand mechanics, volume-to-float ratios, and how squeezes exhaust.

A float squeeze is what happens when demand meets a stock with almost no supply. When a company has only a few hundred thousand freely tradable shares and millions of shares of volume show up, price becomes untethered from any valuation logic.

The setup. The float — shares actually available to trade, excluding insider and restricted holdings — is the whole story. Repeated reverse splits are the most common way micro-cap floats get this small. Add any catalyst (news, a compliance headline, a sympathy move) and buyers, short-coverers, and momentum algorithms all compete for the same handful of shares.

The number that matters: volume-to-float. When a session’s volume is 10x, 30x, 50x the float, the entire float is changing hands over and over. That’s a rotation-driven move — nobody is “holding” this stock; it’s a hot potato. The bigger the ratio, the more explosive the move and the faster the exhaustion.

What to check.

  • Actual float size and whether a reverse split recently concentrated it
  • Short interest relative to float — covering fuel amplifies the move
  • Whether the company has an active ATM or ELOC: management can sell new shares directly into the squeeze, and usually does

How they usually end. Squeezes exhaust when rotation slows — watch for volume collapsing while price stalls. Gap-and-fade the day after a 100% move is the default outcome, not the exception.
